Older Americans Month- Unleash the Power of Age!

Every year since 1963, May has been a time to celebrate the vitality and aspiration of older adults and their contributions to their communities. The theme for Older Americans Month 2013, “Unleash the Power of Age,” has never been more fitting. Older Americans are productive, active, influential members of society, sharing essential talents, wisdom, and life experience with their families, friends, and neighbors.

The Johnson County community is enriched by the many seniors who volunteer their time to support those who are less fortunate, teach others the skills they honed over the years, and make significant commitments in a myriad of civic matters.

By 2030, the United States will have about 72 million seniors, more than twice their number in 2000. The population 65 and older represented 12 percent of the population in 2000, but is expected to be 19 percent by 2030.  A Profile of Older Americans 2012

The Johnson County Area Agency on Aging provides services, support, and resources to a rapidly growing number of older residents year-round. Older Americans Month is a wonderful opportunity to show special appreciation for some of our most beloved and cherished residents. Make May special by telling senior friends, family, and others that they are indeed appreciated.

Johnson County Catch-a-Ride
Needs Your Help!

Are you interested in driving county residents to critical appointments? We hope so, because Catch-a-Ride needs you! And Catch-a-Ride has a special need for drivers in rural areas such as Gardner, Spring Hill, and De Soto.

Catch-a-Ride is a completely volunteer-based program in which elders, people with a disability, and people in a major life transition are given rides to medical appointments, grocery stores/food pantries, and social service agencies. Clients are people who cannot drive themselves and do not have a network of people who can drive for them.

Volunteers can drive “anytime, anywhere” or only at certain intervals or in certain areas of the county. We are very respectful of driver needs and schedules.

If you are interested or want additional information, please call Brandy 913-715-8866, e-mail Brandy.Hodge@jocogov.org  or see our web page about Volunteer Opportunities
