May is Older Americans Month...and you're
Never Too Old to Play!
Older Americans Month is a great opportunity to show special appreciation
for some of our most beloved citizens.
The theme for Older Americans Month 2012—Never Too Old to Play!—puts a spotlight on the important role older adults play in sharing their experience, wisdom, and understanding, and passing on that knowledge to other generations.
Older adults bring value to our communities through spirited participation in social and faith groups, service organizations, and other activities.
Many older adults remain physically and socially active through their 80s and beyond. People over age 60 account for an ever-growing percentage of participants in community service positions, faith-based organizations, online social networking as well as arts and recreational groups.
Lifelong participation in social, creative, and physical activities has proven health benefits, including retaining mobility, muscle mass, and cognitive abilities. Interactions with family, friends, and neighbors across generations enrich the lives of everyone involved. Young people who have significant relationships with a grandparent or elder say these relationships helped shape their values, goals, and life choices and gave them a sense of identity and roots.

Johnson County CHAMPSS Meal Program is 4 Years Old!
Four years ago, the first CHAMPSS site was launched with our Hy-Vee friends in Olathe. Fast forward and you will find that more than 3,000 area seniors have enjoyed the continuing success of this unique service.
CHAMPSS stands for Choosing Healthy Appetizing Meal Plan Solutions for Seniors; and
healthy food, flexible hours, convenience, and loyal participants make
this program a model for programs across the
nation. The CHAMPSS program offers a unique dining experience at three area
Hy-Vee dining centers in Olathe at 119th & Ridgeview, in Overland Park at
91st and Metcalf, and in Mission at 6655 Martway.
Along with Meals on Wheels and the Congregate Meal Program at our
neighborhood senior centers, CHAMPSS is federally funded through the Older
