CHAMPSS - Choosing Healthy Appetizing Meal Plan Solutions for Seniors
Home Plate Meal Program
Senior food program gaining fame, enthusiasm!
The CHAMPSS (Choosing Healthy Appetizing Meal Plan Solutions for Seniors)
program, which offers seniors a dining alternative to congregate meal sites,
has received publicity that is enhancing the interest of other
nutrition programs and groceries.
Nancy Tanquary, manager of the Johnson County Human Services
Nutrition Program, attended the Meals on Wheels Association of America
Annual Conference and Expo in Pittsburgh, Pa., last August and was one of
three presenters on a panel titled The Congregate Program: Breathing New
Life into an Old Program.
About 75 persons from around the country attended the session, including the
nutritionist from the Administration on Aging in Washington, D.C. Tremendous
interest in HSD’s CHAMPSS program was expressed; Tanquary was peppered with
questions and participants stayed after the presentation to prolong the
discussion.
Tanquary also presented the CHAMPSS program to Kansas Community Nutrition
Services in September, and The Best Times newspaper featured CHAMPSS. As a
result of the publicity, she is being deluged with inquiries from other
nutrition programs and grocery markets, including a senior meals program in
Eugene, Ore.; Clay County, Missouri; the Hy-Vee at 91st and Metcalf; a
Hy-Vee in Topeka; the Southwest Kansas Planning Service Area 06; and
ElderCare, Inc., in Great Bend, Kan.
CHAMPSS was developed by the Johnson County Area Agency on Aging and is
funded through the Older Americans Act in partnership with several Hy-Vee
stores in Johnson County. Through the program, adults 60 and older can
receive a hot, nutritious meal Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and
7:00 p.m. The Hy-Vee dietitian-approved menu allows seniors to select an
entrée, fruit, and vegetable of their choice along with bread and low-fat
milk for a suggested donation of $3.50 per meal. Johnson County residents
who are 60 or older are eligible; to learn more, call 913-715-8894.
