Each year, low-income families receive food and grocery gift certificates that allow them to enjoy a bountiful Thanksgiving. The community generously donates the food and gift certificates to the De Soto Multi-Service Center to be distributed to families in need.
My family needs some food for Thanksgiving. What should I do?
Call the De Soto Multi-Service Center, (913) 583-1152, as soon as possible to find out whether your family is eligible. It is a good idea to contact the De Soto Multi-Service Center by the beginning of November to ensure participation in the program. You will need proof of income, proof of residency, and Social Security cards.
I would like to help. What should I do?
Donations of food, food baskets, and gift certificates are always welcome. You may also “sponsor” a family for Thanksgiving. Call the De Soto Multi-Service Center for full details.
Christmas SponsorshipsThe De Soto Multi-Service Center works with community volunteers to help De Soto families in need enjoy a memorable Christmas. The De Soto Multi-Service Center coordinates an anonymous sponsorship program, matching families in need with individuals, families, groups, and organizations wishing to provide Christmas gifts and Christmas dinner to those less fortunate.
Am I eligible for Christmas assistance?
In order to be sponsored for Christmas, you must:
1. Live in the De Soto School District
2. Meet the income guidelines
3. Provide Social Security cards for everyone in the household
4. Not apply or receive assistance from any other agency for Christmas
If your family meets the above guidelines, contact the De Soto Multi-Service Center to register and complete a wish list for each child. It is a good idea to contact the De Soto Multi-Service Center by the beginning of December to register for the program. Every family that needs assistance will receive non-perishable food, and at least one gift for each child under age 18. Low-income families, persons with a disability and the elderly will receive a food basket. Assistance with a water utility bill and a grocery gift certificate is often provided along with the basket.
How do I sponsor a family?
Contact the De Soto Multi-Service Center as early as possible to be registered as a donor. Every effort will be made to match you or your organization with the family of your preference while keeping identifiable information confidential. You will be given a wish list for each child. All items are delivered to the De Soto Multi-Service Center, and the sponsored families pick them up here. For further details, call the De Soto Multi-Service Center, (913) 583-1152.
